Features and Highlights

A good PC cleanup makes all the difference
As you use your computer, it piles up all kinds of junk: cache, log files, and whatnot. This junk gobbles up your disk space and drags down your computer’s performance. It knows exactly where to find useless files, and which of them are safe to remove. A few clicks — and you’re back on a fast, clean PC.

Get Windows Registry clutter out of the way
Imagine having to find something in a closet packed full of trash. It could take you hours. That’s how it works with Windows Registry: when it’s cluttered with outdated entries, your software and OS have trouble finding the right data in there. CleanMyPC keeps the Registry on your PC clean to make sure your computer is up to speed.

Uninstall the right way to keep your PC clean
Most Windows apps come with their own uninstallers — except they don’t always remove the entire program and leave behind useless cache files or toolbars. It wipes every trace of a program, even the leftovers that are typically overlooked. Because when you want something gone from your computer, you want it really gone.

Windows startup won’t slow you down again
Waiting forever for your PC to boot? That’s because of autorun programs that load along with Windows. Lighten the load on your system without rummaging through the settings: the tool shows you autorun items in a single list, so all it takes to disable them is a click. There’s no easier way to speed up a PC startup.

Cut down on extensions
Why put an additional load on your PC with toolbars and extensions you don’t even use? The program keeps add-ons within easy reach, so you can quickly spot the ones you don’t need and turn them off.

Erase your files securely
Did you know other people can recover the files you delete? Unless you delete them securely, of course. The software shreds your files and makes them impossible to recover, so you can be sure sensitive data is gone.

Protect your online privacy
It scans all your browsers to gather traces of your online activity in one spot. No need to dig through browser settings to clean up cookies or login data: just hit a button to wipe your entire online history clean.

Get rid of the hibernation file
Even if you never use Hibernation, there’s a file that stores a snapshot of your session in case you do — and it hogs gigabytes on your disk. Disabling it manually can be a hassle, but It makes that super simple.

Uninstall multiple apps
Want to remove several programs at once? Do it easily with the tool Multi Uninstaller. Unlike manual program removal, it doesn't require much time and effort.  Just pick whatever you want to remove, launch uninstallation and let Multi Uninstaller work its magic.

Clean leftovers
Programs leave junk even if uninstalled properly? Not on watch! The program automatically starts to scan for leftovers after the program is removed and cleans whatever remains.  As a result, no empty folders and unnecessary files after program removal. That means more space for fresh, new apps!

Uninstall any program
What if for some reason you can’t uninstall a program? The app will do the job, no matter if it is a third party program you installed on your own or a pre-installed Windows store app. You can uninstall any app you want. Well, almost any. Multi Uninstaller doesn’t remove system apps that are essential for your Windows performance.

Sleep well, uninstall safely
With Clean My PC you can be sure that your computer is in good hands. It includes the safety database to make sure you uninstall exactly what you want - no more, no less. Multi Uninstaller's interface is designed to minimize the risk of errors. So, keep calm and uninstall more with Clean My PC.

Note: Will only clean MB of junk from the system in the demo version. Requires .NET Framework.

20 Easy Ways to Speed Up & Clean Your PC in

Katarina Glamoslija

Short on time? Here’s the fastest, quickest, and easiest way to speed up (and clean) your computer:

  • Download TotalAV — this program has one of the best Windows performance and system optimizers on the market. Simply install the program and the Automatic Optimizer will increase CPU speed, reduce startup times, reduce lag, clean out system junk, remove duplicate and cache files, and do a lot more.

If your computer is running slow, don’t panic.

Slower PC performance over time is completely normal, especially after years of constant use. It can be caused by a lot of things, from a too-full disk drive to a complete hardware failure.

Usually, you can restore your machine back to its optimal performance with some simple fixes that most non-technical users can do at home. And some antivirus suites — like TotalAV — come with device optimization tools that make it even easier to keep your PC running at top performance.

Here are 20 simple solutions for speeding up and cleaning a computer. These fixes will help you significantly speed up your device, extend your PC’s lifespan, and save you time and money.

Why Do Computers Slow Down Over Time?

Computer slowdown can be caused by many different factors, including:

  • Old and outdated hardware.
  • Software issues.
  • Viruses or system malware.

After years of constant use, computer components can wear down, resulting in slower performance. This is totally normal, though it can be a bit annoying. While you may be tempted to upgrade to a new device, there are a few things you can do to help speed up old systems.

Software is another common culprit behind slow-running computers. The more software you install, the more files you’re storing and running on your device. And the more processors your machine has to run, the harder it has to work — which can cause it to slow down. Some software may be unnecessarily slowing your system by running in the background and therefore slowly draining your processing power and battery life.

Computer slowdowns can also be a result of viruses and malware such as ransomware, spyware, and keyloggers, which can get onto computers pretty easily if you don’t have proper internet security protections in place — and they’ll almost always affect your system’s performance. It’s not always obvious if your device has a malware infection, which is why having a reliable antivirus installed (such as TotalAV or Norton  — my favorite in ) is so important.

So let’s go through 20 quick and easy ways to speed up and clean your computer.

1. Restart Your Computer

Restarting your computer is probably the easiest fix for almost any PC problem, including general system slowdowns. When you restart your computer, you stop all running software, tasks, processes, and open pieces of data that are draining your computer’s processing power.

When you boot back up, your computer will have a lot more free memory to operate, which is why it will likely perform a lot faster.

Because restarting your machine is almost effortless (and pretty quick), you should always use this method first before trying anything else.

2. Stop Heavy-Duty Tasks & Programs

A computer’s slowdown is often related to programs that require a lot of RAM, CPU power, or hard drive space to run properly.

You can either manually close the apps and programs you’re not using, or you can open the Windows Task Manager — which shows you what programs and background processes are using most of your RAM, CPU, and memory — and close those that are using the most energy.

To do this, open up Task Manager (right-click the Windows Start icon in the lower-left corner of your screen, and select “Task Manager”). Under the “Processes” tab you’ll see all the processes and programs that are running and the disk space and energy they are using, so you can identify those you want to stop. Then simply click on a program or process and click “End Task” at the bottom right-hand corner of the window. You can also do this by right-clicking on the program you wish to close and clicking “End Task”.

Doing this will drastically reduce the drain on your CPU and likely speed up computer performance, and it will also extend your computer battery’s lifespan (if you have a laptop).

3. Download a Device Optimization Program

Device optimization programs — like the ones included with antiviruses like Norton and TotalAV — make cleaning and speeding up your PC extremely easy.

For example, TotalAV’s System Tune Up feature manages your device’s memory usage by identifying apps that consume too much of your device’s memory and resources and giving you a list of suggested apps to close.

Most top antivirus brands offering system optimization features are subscription-based. Fortunately, they are all pretty affordable. And antiviruses like TotalAV offer a day money-back guarantee, which means you can optimize and clean up your PC and get a full refund if you don’t want to keep the program — making this fix totally free.

4. Remove Unused Apps, Software & Bloatware

If you have too many pieces of software installed and/or running, your computer is not going to be as quick and optimized as it should be.

While many programs and processes are important to keep, you should delete any apps or other software that you’ve installed previously but no longer use. You’ll also want to remove the “bloatware” that comes pre-installed on most computers these days — sponsored apps and utilities that you have no real use for.

To remove unused programs and bloatware, right-click on the Windows Start button on the lower-left corner of your screen and choose “Apps and Features”. This will bring up a list of all of your computer’s installed software. From there, it’s easy to uninstall programs you don’t need and stop them from using your PC’s resources.

Alternatively, you can use antivirus software that comes with device optimization features (like TotalAV, see #3) to find and remove unnecessary programs, duplicate files, caches and cookies, and speed up your computer.

5. Delete Large Files (Manually & With Disk Cleanup)

After years of use, a lot of your computer’s storage may include data like:

  • Leftover files from program installs.
  • Offline web pages.
  • Temporary files.
  • Setup log files.
  • File compression.
  • And more…

Eventually, these files will build up into “monster files” that make your computer work harder due to the sheer size of them.

Removing these files can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour (or even longer), depending on their size. To avoid the long wait, try cleaning unnecessary files regularly — or even after completing every task.

To do this, right-click the Windows Start button and open the File Explorer. Then make sure it’s showing “This PC” in the main location bar.

Using the search box in the top right-hand corner, type “size:empty”. This will return results for files that are 0 bytes and open the main search tools window. You can then click on the “Size” tab and choose any size from “Empty” to “Gigantic”. Search for the “Large”, “Huge”, and “Gigantic” files and delete any that are unimportant. Delete the files by simply right-clicking on the file and hitting “Delete”.

Alternatively, you can use the free built-in Disk Cleanup app in Windows to help you sort out your digital clutter.

Type “Disk Cleanup” in the search box next to the Windows icon and click on the app with the same name from the list of results.

A new window will open showing you all the files you can delete and the space you´ll free up. You can also hit “Clean up system files” to run the search again. Then, under “Files to delete”, select the files you want to get rid of and hit “OK” to delete them.

Pretty much everything should be safe to delete, but I’d recommend keeping “Windows ESD installation files” if this option appears (depending on which version of Windows you have) — these files are used to reset your PC, so if you delete these and ever need a complete reset, it will be a pain.

You can also click on “View Files” (where it’s available) to check exactly what will be deleted from the other categories. For example, you might want to review the Recycle Bin before permanently deleting everything there.

Keep in mind that these kinds of files accumulate real fast, so it’s important to regularly delete them from your hard drive.

6. Delete Old Files & Downloads

The Disk Cleanup utility is perfect for deleting files you never even knew were taking up space, but chances are you have even more old files that can be deleted in order to free up disk space.

The biggest culprits to look at are photos, videos, and files in your Downloads folder. Over the course of several years, your Downloads folder accumulates photos, documents, and email attachments that you might no longer need — and they take up a ton of room on your computer’s hard drive.

Consider moving some files to a cloud storage platform, like OneDrive, or backing up files onto a separate drive to free up space on your main computer’s storage. This can significantly improve your computer speed.

Backing up files also protects you in case your hard drive fails, you lose your computer, or if other damages occur.

You can use OneDrive to keep anything you don’t need to access often. It’s already built into the Windows operating system, it’s easy to use, and it’s free.

To manage your OneDrive, open the File Explorer, right-click “OneDrive”, and click on “Settings”.

You can manage all the settings there, including when and where to backup old and unused files. If you want to delete something off of your computer but save it to OneDrive, make sure it’s synced to the OneDrive cloud before you delete it off of your computer.

Top antivirus suites like Norton  also include secure cloud storage, which is another option. Norton isn’t free, but given it comes with performance optimization tools and % effective malware protection, plus a whole heap of other features, it’s a great value and highly convenient option for keeping your PC safe and fast. It also comes with a day money-back guarantee, so you can try it out totally risk free.

7. Empty Your Recycle Bin

Most people delete files fairly regularly, but these files get moved to the Recycle Bin and are then forgotten about. It’s important to regularly empty the Recycle Bin to fully remove deleted files from your system.

Just be aware that when you empty the Recycle Bin this permanently removes the files from your PC, they’re gone forever — unless you’ve backed them up onto your external hard drive or to a cloud storage platform.

8. Remove Unused Browser Extensions

If your internet browser is running slow, that might be because you have too many extensions running at the same time.

Removing extensions that you don’t need saves computer memory, thereby speeding up its overall performance.

If you’re using Google Chrome, simply click on the puzzle-shaped extensions icon in the top right of your browser, then click on the 3 dots to the right of any extension you want to remove, and hit “Remove from Chrome”.

The process is the same for Microsoft Edge.

If you see any extension you don’t recognize or don’t use, you should immediately uninstall it.

This method applies even to tiny browser extensions that may look harmless at first but can significantly eat up your computer’s memory.

In general, anything that doesn’t need to be on your computer should be removed, and that includes browser extensions.

9. Clear Browser Cache, History & Temporary Internet Files

Unless you have a specific need to keep track of your browser history, you should regularly clear it out. This will prevent your computer and web browser from lagging. When clearing your browsing data, you should also clear cookies, cached images, and other temporary files.

In Chrome, go to the main Chrome menu (3 vertical dots) on the upper right-hand corner of your browser window and click on “History”. This opens a new window — select “Clear browsing data” from the left-hand menu and another pop-up will appear showing you the type of browsing data you can clear.

Choose the data you want to delete, and the time range — “All time” is the best, particularly if you´ve not done it before — and then hit “Clear data”.

The process is pretty much the same for most browsers — just go into your browser settings and clear the history.

Alternatively, you can use third-party tools like TotalAV, which doesn’t only offer safe browsing with antivirus protection but also cleans cookies and browsing history with a couple of clicks.

To maintain stable computer speed, make a habit of regularly clearing browser cache, history, and temporary internet files.

Optimize Startup Applications With the Task Manager

Your computer usually launches all kinds of different processes, tasks, and programs upon booting up. Some programs are necessary, but others can unnecessarily slow down startup times.

You can manage what startup programs you want to be running in the background using the Task Manager.

Open the Task Manager and choose the “Startup” tab. You’ll see a list of all of the programs that launch every time your computer turns on (along with each program’s impact on startup speed).

Identify any that you don’t need to automatically launch at startup, particularly those with a “High” impact, and remove them from the list by clicking on the program and then hitting “Disable”.

Again, antiviruses like TotalAV make this process easy by letting you easily enable and disable startup programs from the software’s main interface.

Check for Malware, Adware & Spyware

Malware and viruses can infect your computer and impact performance by taking over computer resources in the background.

Reputable antivirus software can help protect your PC by scanning for and removing threats. The best antiviruses include real-time protection to block malware from entering your system in the first place.

There are many free antiviruses available, but most of them lack the comprehensive malware and internet security protections that will keep your devices % safe. However, many top antiviruses come at affordable prices, and they all come with money-back guarantees, so you can even purchase the product, check/clean your device, and then cancel your subscription before the money-back guarantee is over.

My favorite antivirus is Norton — it’s got % malware detection/removal rates along with one of the best device optimizers on the market. TotalAV is also a really good option as it comes with a range of useful additional features, including device optimization tools that are easy to use for non-technical users.

Turn Off Search Indexing

To help you find the files and programs you need as fast as possible, Windows PCs keep an up-to-date index of all of your drives.

Ironically, building this index takes up system resources (especially for low-powered PCs) and can slow down your computer’s performance. But you can always turn off or tweak search indexing.

To turn off search indexing, open the “Indexing Options Control Panel” by typing “index” in the Start button search box and then clicking on the app from the search results.

A pop-up will open, click on “Modify”, which will then open a second window called “Indexed Locations”. From there, deselect all of your computer’s drives if you don’t want them to be indexed.

After this process, your Windows Search indexing is fully disabled. Your searches will take longer, but your computer won’t be bogged down by trying to continuously build and update indexes of all of your files. You can always turn it back on again if there’s any problem with the search performance.

Run the Troubleshooter

Sometimes there are hidden settings that are impacting performance, and you can find and fix problems with some general troubleshooting.

Type “troubleshoot” in the search bar and click on “Troubleshoot settings” from the list of results. If there are any recommended troubleshooters, these will be shown at the top of the window that opens. If not, you can manually run troubleshooters on lots of different areas — depending on your version of Windows, these will be behind an “Additional troubleshooters” link or at the bottom of the main window. Click on each one of the areas in the troubleshoot list and click “Run the troubleshooter” to analyze your system for issues.

The utility will mainly look for the issues I already covered on this list, but it should also find some things that might be impacting performance (like a hidden power setting or video setting).

Adjust Appearance & Visual Settings

Adjusting your computer’s visualizations likely won’t dramatically improve performance, but it could help in some cases.

Type “appearance” into the Windows search box and click on “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows” from the results that appear — this will open the “Performance Options” dialog box.

You can either uncheck specific appearance settings or just choose the setting “Adjust for best performance”. This causes you to lose all of your system’s visual effects (like fades and animations) which may help with speed a little bit.

Change Your PC’s Power Settings

Your computer sometimes reserves a little bit of performance in order to save energy, especially in the case of laptops that aren’t connected to a power outlet.

Changing your PC’s power settings is easy. Simply click on the battery icon in your Windows tray and slide the slider to “Best Performance”.

Just bear in mind that this will drain your battery faster if you’re not connected to a power outlet.

Scan Your Hard Drive for Errors

One possible cause of a PC slowdown is an error in the way your hard drive stores and accesses data.

Luckily, Windows has a built-in utility that helps scan and fix hard drive problems like bad sectors, lost clusters, or directory errors.

To check for hard drive errors, open the File Explorer by right-clicking on the Windows icon. In the window that opens, right-click on your local disk (usually the C: drive) shown under “Devices and drives” and choose “Properties”. Another pop-up will appear: go into the “Tools” tab and then click “Check”.

Some computers will start the scan automatically, but your computer may have two options — “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors”, which is on by default, and “Automatically fix file system errors”, which is unchecked by default. Tick “Automatically fix file system errors”.

The scan may take a couple of minutes to complete.

Your PC will inform you whether everything is okay or if there are errors to fix.

Alternatively, you can also run CHKDSK via the command prompt window. Right-click the Start icon in the lower-left corner, then select “Windows PowerShell (Admin)”. In the command prompt window, type in “CHKDSK”, then a space, followed by the disk you want to check. So to check the C drive, type “CHKDSK C:” and then press enter.

Whichever one you prefer, both methods will help you scan your hard drive for errors.

Defragment Your Hard Drive (HDD only)

Defragmenting your hard drive basically means better organizing the data it stores.

Older-style HDDs (hard disk drives) get a little messy and chaotic over time as they move bits of data around. Defragmenting helps sort the data and puts it where it should be, making it easier and faster to access.

Try this method if all of the earlier solutions aren’t effective enough in speeding up your computer.

This process may take several hours to complete, depending on the size of the file storage.

All you have to do to defrag your HDD is type “defrag” in the Windows search box and open the “Defragment and Optimize Drives” app from the results list. When you open the app, choose the drive you want to clean up and hit “Optimize”.

Important: You shouldn’t perform this method on Solid State Drives (SSDs). That’s because defragmentation can cause unnecessary wear and tear to an SSD. This can lower the lifespan of the SSD.

Reinstall Windows

If your computer is severely slowed down, consider starting again with a fresh version of Windows.

You can do this from home and you won’t need to pay for a new version of Windows if you already have Windows installed and activated. But installation can take up to a few hours, and you will need to reinstall all of your apps and settings (and maybe even your files).

Before you do this, first back up all of your files. A full reinstall wipes your entire drive, which means you’ll permanently lose any files you’ve not backed up. There is another option for a reinstall that keeps your apps and files, but it is still a good idea to fully back up everything beforehand, to be safe.

Then, go into your computer’s “Settings” panel and click on “Update & Security”. Then click on “Recovery” and then “Get started” under “Reset this PC”.

You’ll have the option to “Keep my files”, which will only remove apps and settings, or “Remove everything”, which will completely remove all files, apps, and settings.

Regardless of which one you choose, make sure that your files are backed up.

Overclock Your CPU

Overclocking essentially means forcing your CPU components to run faster than they were designed to.

This method can be a bit dangerous, as overclocking can cause processors to overheat and become damaged. It may not even be possible to overclock your CPU if the motherboard is locked.

Overclocking can also be very time-consuming and expensive if you mess up the CPU in the process.

I wouldn’t recommend this option for most users. But for advanced, technically-minded users who are experienced in upgrading their PC, this might be something worth trying.

Before overclocking your CPU, you’ll need to upgrade your computer’s cooling system (with a higher-powered fan) and update the clock rate via the BIOS.

If you have the experience and know-how, this is a clever, backdoor way to speed up a computer.

Upgrade Your Computer’s Hardware

If all else fails, there could be mechanical problems that are limiting your computer’s performance. Maybe your computer components are just so out of date that they can’t keep up with modern demands.

Therefore, consider upgrading some of your computer’s components to speed up your system. Desktop PCs will usually be easier to upgrade than laptops, but always check with your manufacturer first.

You have a few options here, depending on what’s causing your computer’s slowdown:

  • Upgrade your computer’s RAM to handle more tasks at the same time.
  • Switch your HDD for an SSD for faster and easier access to files and shorter load times.
  • Upgrade your GPU (graphics processor) for a better experience with gaming and high-definition video.

It’s always best to seek professional advice and assistance when upgrading your computer’s RAM, hard drive, GPU, or any other components.

Maintaining Good PC Performance

Regardless of what’s causing your PC to slow down over time, there are a few best practices to keep in mind for better day-to-day performance, such as:

  • Always fully close apps and software you’re not using.
  • Move large files to an external storage drive and/or to a cloud storage platform.
  • Regularly empty your Recycle Bin and delete software caches and unnecessary downloads.
  • Properly shut down and restart your computer regularly.
  • Do occasional defrags (if you have an HDD) and run CHKDSK scans for errors.
  • Protect your device with a reliable antivirus program.

In most cases, these simple fixes should improve your computer’s speed. Antivirus software like Norton  and TotalAV are well known for enhancing computer performance in addition to providing protections against cyber threats.

However, all computers and their components degrade and have to be replaced or upgraded over time. But with proper care, you can delay that and give your computer a long, happy life.

To ensure your Windows 10 or 11 PC continues to run smoothly, you should clean up your PC on a regular basis. Cleaning a PC basically involves getting rid of unwanted files, adjusting the startup programs list, and defragging the drives.

In both Windows 10 and 11 operating systems, you have built-in tools to clean up your system. You can also manually clear your unwanted folders and files if you want.

Remove Unwanted Apps To Clean Up Your PC

If you have any unused apps sitting on your PC, it’s best to remove them to clear your storage space. You can do so using the Settings app on both Windows 10 and

  1. Open the Settings app on your PC by pressing Windows + I keys at the same time.
  2. Select Apps on the Settings screen.
  1. Find the app that you’d like to remove and select that app.
  2. Select Uninstall in the section that opens for your app.
  1. Choose Uninstall in the prompt that opens to remove the selected app.
  1. Your app should now be removed.

Follow the above process for each app that you want to uninstall on your computer.

Use Disk Cleanup to Clean Up Your Windows 10/11 PC

Disk Cleanup is a built-in tool in Windows that you can use to find and delete unwanted files from your system. This tool automatically scans for junk files and helps you get rid of them.

  1. Open the Start menu, search for Disk Cleanup, and select Disk Cleanup in the search results.
  1. Choose the drive you’d like to clean up and select OK.
  1. Wait for Disk Cleanup to analyze the selected drive.
  2. On the Disk Cleanup window, choose the files that you’d like to let go from your computer. Then, select OK at the bottom.
  1. Select Delete Files in the prompt that appears to remove the selected files from your machine.

Delete Large Folders To Make Space on Your Windows PC

Nothing occupies more space on your hard drive than those old and unused large folders. Luckily, Windows has a built-in tool to quickly find those memory-hogging folders on your computer. You can then manually remove those folders if you want.

  1. Press the Windows + I keys simultaneously to open the Settings app.
  2. Select System on the Settings window.
  1. Choose Storage from the sidebar on the left.
  2. Select Other in the pane on the right.
  1. You’ll see a list of folders that occupy a significant chunk of your storage space.
  1. Select a folder to open it in File Explorer. You can then manually delete the folder in File Explorer.

Uninstall Built-In Apps and Make Your PC Bloatware-Free

Both Windows 10 and 11 come preloaded with certain apps. If you don’t make use of these apps, you can remove these apps and clean up your PC.

  1. Access the Start menu and find the built-in app you’d like to remove.
  2. Right-click on the app and select Uninstall from the menu.
  1. Select Uninstall in the prompt that opens to remove the app from your PC.

Use these steps to remove any other built-in apps from your computer.

Empty the Recycle Bin

When you delete a file from your PC, that file goes straight into the Recycle Bin. This means, if you don’t clear the contents of the Recycle Bin on a regular basis, the Bin will grow large.

Luckily, there’s a single option you can use to empty the entire Recycle Bin at once:

  1. Locate the Recycle Bin shortcut on your desktop.
  2. Right-click the Recycle Bin shortcut and choose Empty Recycle Bin from the menu.
  1. Select Yes in the prompt that appears.

Defrag Your Drives

By defragging your drives, you bring the relevant data together on your disks. This doesn’t change how the files appear on your PC as these changes are only internal.

  1. Open the Start menu, search for Defragment and Optimize Drives, and select that option in the search results.
  1. Select your main hard drive on the Optimize Drives window and choose the Optimize button.
  1. Wait for Windows to defrag your drive.

Disable Startup Apps To Make Your PC Boot Up Faster

Your PC has certain apps, called startup apps, that automatically launch when you turn on your computer. If your computer takes too long to boot up, you should remove non-essential apps from this startup apps list.

This doesn’t delete your apps, and you can always re-add your apps to the startup apps list.

  1. Launch the Settings app by pressing Windows + I keys simultaneously.
  2. Select Apps on the Settings window.
  3. Choose Startup from the sidebar on the left.
  4. Find the app you want to stop launching on your PC’s boot. Then turn the toggle for that app to the off position. Repeat this process for each app you don’t want to launch when you turn on your machine.

Remove Browser Extensions and History

While cleaning your Windows 10 or 11 PC, cleaning your web browsers is also important as they are part of your system. In most browsers, you can clean up the contents by deleting your browsing history and removing unused extensions.

In most web browsers, you can remove the extensions by right-clicking the extensions and selecting Remove.

You can clear your browsing history by heading into your browser’s Settings menu and choosing an appropriate option. You can remove cookies and other site data as well.

Built-In Tools Make It Easier To Clean Up Your Windows 10/11 PC

How to clean up system files with the Windows 10 Disk Cleanup tool

Windows 10 has a feature built into the Disk Cleanup tool called Clean Up System Files that not many people take full advantage of. This feature is designed to help you regain valuable hard disk space by removing system files that are no longer necessary to the functioning of the operating system&#;old installation files, Windows Update leftovers, clean my pc windows 10, and outdated device drivers, just to name a few.

In this article, I&#;ll take a closer look at the Disk Cleanup tool and then focus in on the Clean Up System Clean my pc windows 10 feature. As I do, I&#;ll give you a little background on the types of files that this tool is designed to remove from your hard disk.

Note: Before you attempt any of the steps shown in this article, I recommend that you restart your system to ensure that any pending Windows Update operations are complete and to ensure you are beginning with a clean slate.

The WinSxS folder

If you used the Windows operating system back in the Windows 9.x days, you&#;re familiar with the term DLL Hell. This situation arose when you installed different programs that included updated versions of DLL (Dynamic Link Library) files with the same name as files already on the system. These duplicate files would wreak havoc with applications and the operating system. For example, an application would look for a specific version of a DLL file, but find a newer version that was recently updated by another program. Since the version was different, the application would act strangely or crash altogether.

Must-read Windows coverage

By the time Windows Vista was introduced, Microsoft had solved the problem by creating a new technology called componentization, which uses a folder called WinSxS, which allows the operating system to store and keep track of all kinds of operating system files, DLLs included, with the same name but different versions. (WinSxS is short for Windows Side-by-Side and refers to using files with the same name but with different version numbers at the same time in the operating system.)

As things evolved, the WinSxS folder also became the perfect place to clean my pc windows 10 files added to the operating system by Windows Update. As you probably know from firsthand experience, Microsoft releases a multitude of updates every month to keep up with bugs, new applications, and security problems, just to name a few of the reasons for regular updates. To make sure that the updates don&#;t cause compatibility problems, all kinds of duplicate files get stored in the WinSxS folder so that everything can continue to function correctly. Furthermore, many Windows updates are designed such that if they do cause unanticipated compatibility problems, they can be uninstalled and the files can be reverted to a previous state.

While this is a pretty simplified description of the WinSxS folder, the general idea I want to convey here is that the WinSxS folder can grow so large that it takes up a good chunk of hard disk space. The problem gets compounded by the fact that the WinSxS folder is used to store so many files. This means that old files as well as files that are no longer necessary can still be taking up hard disk space.

For instance, Figure A shows the WinSxS folder properties dialog on a system that began as a Windows 7 system, which was upgraded to Windows 8.x and again to Windows As you can see, the WinSxS folder on this system contains 60, files and takes up a grand total clean my pc windows 10 GB of hard disk space.

Figure A

The WinSxS folder can be quite large.

If you want more technical details about the origin of componentization and the WinSxS folder, you can view this post from the Ask the Core Team blog on the Microsoft TechNet site.

The Disk Cleanup tool

The Disk Cleanup tool has been around for quite some time. Its job is to make it easy to clean out old and unnecessary files that can clog up your hard disk. It&#;s the perfect place for the Clean Up System Files feature to live, since it&#;s designed to weed through the WinSxS folder and eliminate waste, clean my pc windows 10. Rather than just jumping straight into the Clean up system files feature, let&#;s look at the Disk Cleanup tool as a whole and then delve into the how the feature works.

To easily run the Disk Cleanup tool, launch File Explorer, select This PC, and select Local Disk (C:). To continue, select the Drive Tools Manage tab and click the Cleanup button, as shown in Figure B.

Figure B

You can launch Disk Cleanup from within File Explorer.

Once you launch Disk Cleanup, it will begin to analyze the files on your hard disk to determine what can be safely removed, as shown in Figure C.

Figure C

The Disk Cleanup tool will scan your hard disk and locate files that can be removed to free up space.

Once the disk space analysis is complete, you&#;ll see the main Disk Cleanup interface (Figure D), which essentially lists the categories or locations containing unnecessary files on your hard disk that can be removed. Adjacent to each category you&#;ll see the size of the unnecessary files as well as a check box that allows you to specify that you want to remove those files.

Figure D

The main feature of the Disk Cleanup interface is the Files to delete scrolling list.

Beneath the list is a number indicating the total amount of disk space you&#;ll gain by removing the selected files, clean my pc windows 10. And below that is the description panel, clean my pc windows 10, which offers more details about the selected category. The categories in the list will depend on what the Disk Cleanup tool found on your hard disk. Table A shows some of the most common categories you will find in Disk Cleanup, along with the descriptions provided.

Table A

Most common categories listed in the Disk Cleanup tool

As you select the various categories in the list, a View Files button may appear. If it does, you can click it to launch a separate File Explorer window that will show the unnecessary files stored in that location. Keep in mind that the View Files button is not available for all of the categories.

The Clean Up System Files feature

If you refer back to Figure C, you&#;ll see the Clean Up System Files button next to the View Files button. Note: This button is flagged with the UAC (User Account Control) icon. Depending on your UAC setting you may see a Epic Pen Pro 3.9 Crack For Windows Latest 2021 prompt when you select that button.

When you click the Clean Up System Files button, Disk Cleanup will display a screen similar to the one shown in Figure B as it analyzes additional locations on your hard disk to determine what can be safely removed. When the main Disk Cleanup interface returns, you&#;ll see several additional categories, clean my pc windows 10. Table B shows some of the most common categories in Disk Cleanup&#;s Files To Delete list after you click the Clean Up System Files button.

Running Disk Cleanup

When you select some or clean my pc windows 10 of the various categories, take note of them and the value in the Total Amount Of Disk Space You Gain row. On my example system, I selected all the categories, and Disk Cleanup reported that I would gain GB of disk space. When you&#;re ready, click OK. Disk Cleanup will prompt you to confirm that you want to permanently delete the selected files, as shown in Figure E.

Figure E

Disk Cleanup will prompt you to confirm the permanent delete operation.

When you click Delete Files, Disk Cleanup will go to work cleaning up all the files in the categories you selected, clean my pc windows 10, as shown in Figure F.

Figure F

Disk Cleanup will remove any unnecessary files.

The end result

When Disk Cleanup is done, the dialog will just close. Unfortunately, you won&#;t receive any feedback on the success of the operation, clean my pc windows 10. However, you will want to restart your system once Disk Cleanup completes its operation. After your system restarts, check the results manually by launching Disk Cleanup, selecting the categories you selected the first time through, and taking note of the value in the Total amount Of Disk Space You Gain row.

As you can see in Figure G, on my example system I went from GB down to MB&#;which means that I gained approximately GB of hard disk space. A very good gain indeed!

Figure G

To check your results, rerun Disk Cleanup.

I then went back to the WinSxS folder properties dialog and discovered that the number of files only dropped from 60, to 57, and the size of the WinSxS folder only dropped from GB to GB&#;a small gain. As you survey your results, keep in mind that the Clean Up System Files feature will remove files from the WinSxS folder only if they&#;re no longer needed by the system. You may find that a lot of files have been removed from your system or you may find that very few files have been removed from your system.

Other WinSxS folder cleanup methods

If you have a modest reduction of the size of the WinSxS folder after running Disk Cleanup, stand by for my next article. In it I&#;ll cover some other cleanup methods that directly target the WinSxS folder. Stay tuned!

Alex Sayers

Effectiveness: Win back storage space & keep PC running smoothly
Price: A one-time payment of $ per PC
Ease of Use: Intuitive, clean my pc windows 10, quick and good looking
Support: Email support and an online FAQ available

Summary

Available for Windows users and priced at just $ for a single-PC license, CleanMyPC is a simple to use, lightweight piece of software for cleaning unwanted files from your computer, optimizing Windows start-up times, and ensuring your PC runs smoothly.

The program is made up of eight distinct tools, including a disk cleaner, a registry “fixer”, a secure file deletion tool, and an uninstaller.

What I Like: A clean, simple, and easy-to-use user interface. Users can quickly recover a large amount of hard drive space. Added tools like Uninstaller and the Autorun manager are handy and simple to use.

What I Don&#;t Like: Secure Erase added to context menus with no option to remove it. Alerts can be irritating after a while.

Over the course of this review, you’ll see that I found the software both easy to use and effective. It cleaned up more than 5GB of unwanted files clean my pc windows 10 my PC and fixed more than registry issues in a matter of minutes. Aimed at users who want an all-in-one solution to keeping their PC fresh, CleanMyPC incorporates many existing Windows tools and builds on them to offer a simple and non-technical option for computer maintenance.

We’ve also tested CleanMyMac, another maintenance tool made for Mac users, also from MacPaw. I called it “perhaps the best Call of duty download Free Activators cleaning app” out there, clean my pc windows 10. Today, I’ll be taking a look at CleanMyPC, the Windows-based alternative, to see whether MacPaw can replicate that success for PC users.

It is a suite of tools designed to help you clean up unwanted files from your PC and ensure it continues running smoothly and quickly.

While the main attraction is its “cleaning” service, a scan of your computer for any unnecessary files that may be taking up space, ManyCam License key offers eight tools in total, including a service for cleaning up your PC’s registry, clean my pc windows 10, an uninstaller tool, options for managing auto-run settings, clean my pc windows 10, and a browser extension manager.

No, it isn’t. While there is a free trial, and it’s free to download, you will be limited to a one-time MB cleanup and up to 50 items fixed in your registry. The free trial should be viewed as more of a demo than a free version, as most users will hit those limits almost immediately.

How Much Does CleanMyPC Cost?

If you do want to go beyond the free trial, you’ll need to purchase a license. It’s available for $ for a single PC, clean my pc windows 10 for two, or $ for the “Family Pack” with codes for five computers. See full pricing here.

Yes, it is. I downloaded the program from the developer’s website and have had no issues after installing it on two separate PCs. Nothing has been flagged as malware or a virus, and I’ve had no compatibility issues with any other software.

CleanMyPC should be pretty safe for you to use, too. It won’t delete anything vital from your PC, and it gives you a chance to change your mind before you delete anything at all, clean my pc windows 10. I’ve experienced no issues with the program deleting anything that it shouldn’t. However, it’s worth saying here that it always pays to take a little care to make sure you’re not accidentally removing anything important.

I would like to see the inclusion of an alert to backup your registry before running the registry cleaner, however. It’s a feature that clean my pc windows 10 long been part of CCleaner, a rival product to CleanMyPC, and it offers a little more security and peace of mind when dealing with something so delicate and vital to your computer as the registry. Likewise, a little more detail about what exact files are being deleted during a cleanup would be welcome, if only to remove all doubt about what’s being done.

Important Update: CleanMyPC is going to partially sunset. Starting from Decemberit won’t receive regular updates, only critical ones. Also, there will be no subscription option to purchase, only a one-time license for $ And Windows 11 is the last OS version to be supported by CleanMyPC.

Why Trust Me for This CleanMyPC Review

My name is Alex Sayers. I&#;ve been using many different PC maintenance tools for at least 12 years now, always looking for ways to improve and streamline my PC use. For several years, I&#;ve tested and written about software too, trying to give readers an unbiased look at the tools on offer from an amateur&#;s point of view.

After downloading CleanMyPC from the MacPaw website, I&#;ve been testing every feature of the software for a few days, comparing it to similar tools that I&#;ve used in the past across two Windows PCs with different hardware and software onboard.

In writing this review, I&#;ve tested every feature of CleanMyPC, from the baseline cleanup options to the &#;shredder&#; facility, taking the time to get to know the software in detail. Over the course of this article, you should get clean my pc windows 10 good idea of whether this tool is right for you, and get a look at the features and pros and cons of using it.

Detailed Review of CleanMyPC

So we&#;ve taken a look at what the software offers and how you can get your hands on it, and now I&#;ll run through each of the eight tools that it provides to see what benefits it can bring to your PC.

PC Cleanup

We&#;ll start with the main selling point of this cleaning program, its file cleanup tool.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that, having not done a scan for a few weeks, CleanMyPC found just over 1GB more unneeded files to delete than CCleaner did &#; around GB of cache, temp, and memory dump files in total.

CCleaner does give you the option of seeing exactly which files have been found and flagged for deletion, something which the MacPaw program lacks, but there&#;s no denying that CleanMyPC does a thorough search of your hard drive.

As a nice added touch, you can also set a size limit on your recycle bin through CleanMyPC, flagging it to automatically empty if it gets too full. Also in the options menu is the choice to allow the cleaning of attached USB devices, saving you space on your USB drives and external HDDs.

The cleanup process is as simple as can be, with just a &#;scan&#; and a &#;clean&#; button being all that stands between users and plenty of reclaimed disk space. The scan and clean were quick too, both on SSDs and older HDDs, and the checkbox list of discovered items gives you some control over what files you delete.

Registry Cleaner

Just as with the cleaning application, CleanMyPC appeared to be much more thorough in its search for registry &#;issues&#; to fix than CCleaner was, finding in total while Piriform&#;s software identified just seven.

Again, the scan was simple to run and quick to complete. The vast majority of issues identified by these two programs&#;and any others I&#;ve ever tried, for that matter&#;are issues which users would never have noticed, however, so it&#;s difficult to assess the effect that a quick registry cleanup like this might have on your PC. Still, it&#;s reassuring that MacPaw has made their tool so thorough in performing its duties.

As I mentioned earlier, I do wish that CleanMyPC had a built-in option for backing up your registry before you start &#;fixing&#; items in it, clean my pc windows 10, if just clean my pc windows 10 a little peace of mind, but it is something that you can do manually outside of the program if you choose.

Uninstaller

CleanMyPC&#;s Uninstaller function comes in two parts. First, it runs the selected program&#;s own uninstaller, the one that the developer built, and then it runs CleanMyPC&#;s own service to tidy up the files and extensions typically left behind by the uninstallation goodsync enterprise crack unlikely that you&#;ll regain much disk space from a function like this. In clean my pc windows 10 experience, it&#;s usually just empty folders left behind or registry associations. It could, though, help to keep everything organized and structured on your disk and avoid any registry issues in the future.

This process was quick and simple, so I see no reason not to use it if you don&#;t trust a program&#;s built-in uninstaller to remove every last hint of itself.

Hibernation

Hibernation files are used by Windows as part of an ultra-low power state called, you guessed it, hibernation. Used mostly on laptops, hibernation is a way for your computer to consume practically no power at all while still remembering your files and the PC&#;s state before you switch it off. It&#;s similar to clean my pc windows 10 mode, but instead of open files being stored in RAM until the computer is woken up again, information is saved to your hard ManyCam License key to consume less power.

Desktop users will usually never make use of this function, but Windows creates and stores hibernation files all the same, potentially taking up a large chunk of disk space. In my case, Windows was apparently using a little more than 3GB for hibernation, and CleanMyPC offers a quick way to both delete the files and switch off the hibernation function entirely.

Extensions

The program&#;s built-in extension manager is a simple tool for removing unwanted browser extensions and Windows gadgets, displaying a list of each extension enabled in all of the browsers installed on your PC.

With the click of a button, any extension can be uninstalled in seconds. Perhaps it&#;s not useful for most users, but it might be a lifesaver for those whose browsers are cluttered clean my pc windows 10 multiple add-ons or those who want to clean multiple browsers at once.

It could also be handy if your browser or an extension is either corrupted or infected with malware. Often malicious or corrupted extensions and add-ons will prevent the browser from being opened or remove your ability to uninstall the offending item, clean my pc windows 10 CleanMyPC might be a good way to work around that.

Autorun

Staying on top of run-at-startup programs is a simple way of keeping your PC running quickly, and slow boot-up times are one of the biggest complaints that people often have with older PCs that haven&#;t been looked after, clean my pc windows 10. Quite often multiple programs can be added to the startup list without users realizing it, which adds seconds of boot-up time with no real benefit to the user.

Managing which programs run when you start Windows is a fairly simple process without making use of any additional software. However, MacPaw&#;s tools do a good job of presenting a simple list to users, complete with an ‘on-off&#; switch for each item.

The one thing I would like to see included in future versions is a way to add to your list of startup programs. Again, it is something which can be done manually outside of CleanMyPC, but it would be a nice touch to be able to both add and remove programs in one place.

Privacy

The privacy tab allows you to manage what information is stored in each of your installed browsers, with the option to individually clear caches, saved history, sessions, clean my pc windows 10, and cookie information from each one.

It&#;s something that could be managed manually with the options built into each browser, but CleanMyPC&#;s interface offers a quick and simple way to manage them all at once. It&#;s a worthwhile thing to have if you&#;re giving your entire PC a refresh.

Shredder

The final tool in MacPaw&#;s suite is the &#;shredder&#;, a method of securely erasing files and folders from your computer that you want to be unrecoverable. Designed with sensitive information in mind, like financial records or password files, Shredder deletes the files you select and then overwrites them up to three times to ensure that they can&#;t be brought back.

There are other tools out there that do the same job. Both they and the Shredder facility do a good job of granting you some peace of mind when handling sensitive information or disposing of an old HDD.

Reasons Behind My Ratings

Effectiveness: 4/5

CleanMyPC works well, clean my pc windows 10. It quickly identified a lot of files taking up space on both of the PCs I tested it on. It found more than registry issues to fix and made quick work of uninstalling programs and managing the extensions and autorun settings that Clean my pc windows 10 asked it to.

There are some minor missing features that I&#;d like to see added — registry backups, the option to add autorun programs, and a more detailed display of the files it intends to delete — but those are small tweaks that possibly wouldn&#;t be missed by most users.

Price: 4/5

Even though the program comes with a limited trial, it is clearly intended more as a brief demo than a free stripped-back version of the full program. You&#;ll hit its limits very soon after installation.

While it&#;s true that all of the features could be replicated with a suite of free alternatives, clean my pc windows 10, CleanMyPC packages them well in an easy-to-use form and takes some of the technical know-how out of your hands. And for some people, $ is a small price to pay for a hassle-free approach to PC maintenance.

Ease of Use: 5/5

I can&#;t fault how easy it is to use CleanMyPC. Within the few short minutes I had downloaded and installed the program, my PC had been scanned and I was already reclaiming space from unwanted files.

Not only is it quick and easy to use, clean my pc windows 10, but the layout and look of the UI is great, too. It&#;s clean and simple, presenting all of the information that you need without having to click through complex menus or understand technical jargon.

Support: 3/5

Support from MacPaw is good. There&#;s an extensive online knowledge base for CleanMyPC, they have an email form through which you iMazing 2.13.6 Crack+Registration Key 2021 Free Activators contact their team, and you can download clean my pc windows 10 page manual from their website for the program.

I do think it would be great, however, if they offered phone support or an online chat on their website. Even help via social clean my pc windows 10 would be a welcome addition, especially for families paying almost $90 for a set of licenses.

Alternatives to CleanMyPC

CleanMyPC is good, but it might not be for everyone. While it is easy to use and offers an all-in-one approach to PC maintenance, many people won&#;t need or use all of the features available, and some might instead look for more in-depth versions of a particular function.

If CleanMyPC doesn&#;t take your fancy, here are three alternatives that provide similar functionality (you can also see our PC cleaner review for more options):

  • CCleaner &#; Developed by Piriform, CCleaner offers a very similar cleanup and registry fixing service. The premium version adds scheduling, clean my pc windows 10, support, and real-time monitoring.
  • System Mechanic &#; Claiming to clean my pc windows 10 a point diagnostic check of your PC, this software offers several tools for cleaning your disk, speeding up your computer, and boosting performance.
  • Glary Utilities Pro &#; A suite of tools from Glarysoft, Glary Utilities offers many of the same features while also adding disk defragmentation, driver backups, and malware protection.

CleanMyPC vs CCleaner

For several years now, I&#;ve been a big fan of CCleaner, a disk cleanup tool from Piriform (later acquired by Avast), that I use personally on my PCs and recommend to friends and family.

A little later on in this review I&#;ll show you a comparison of the disk cleaning eset nod32 antivirus license key 2020 free download Activators Patch within CleanMyPC and CCleaner, but those aren&#;t the only similarities that the tools share. Both programs also include a registry cleaner (again, compared further down the page), a browser plugin manager, autorun program organizer, and an uninstaller tool.
